Mountain Magic: The Hidden Story behind “Disneyland on the Mountain” with Greg Glasgow and Kathryn Mayer

Greg loves Steely Dan, Kathryn hasn’t tried out for Jeopardy but loves the show and they both want you to read “Disneyland on the Mountain”? Kathryn Mayer, Greg Glasgow take a Beyond the Mic Short Cut.

Welcome Greg & Kathryn

We’re joined on the Starline by a pair of writers and journalists for numerous magazines, newspapers and publications. Their latest project is about a ski resort where guests could ski, go ice skating or potentially meet Mickey Mouse as Walt Disney’s final passion project. What? You’ve never heard about “Disneyland on the Mountain”? The authors Greg Glasgow and Kathryn Mayer join us.

Friends, let’s go Beyond the Mic. The 1960 Winter Olympics in Squaw Valley California was the origin of this project. How has this story stayed hidden until now?

“Walt never forgave himself for his shortsightedness (of Disneyland). He vowed that with any new project he undertook, he would endeavor to control as much of the surrounding land as he could, so that those hotels, restaurants, and gift shops would all be Disney-run.” How did acquiring the land to overcome his past mistakes opened him up to potential failure?

Current projects for the Disney Company and even outside have been influenced by Mineral King project. What’s the one thing that surprised you in your research about the influence of Mineral King for today?

How has this project changed the way you saw Disney?

And Walt was a Honorary lifetime member of the Sierra club…

The Rockin’ 8:

It’s time for the Rockin’ 8, 8 random questions, answer with the first thing that comes to your mind. There is no Pressure. Since we have two guests, we’ll alternate questions:

1. Kathryn, what is the #1 employee benefit that employees all need to take advantage of?

2. Greg, favorite Yacht rock band?

3. Kathryn, last Denver Nuggets game you went to?

4. Greg, how long was typical walk to work?

5. Both of you, favorite season?

6. Greg, what was your worst blowout at a Geeks Who Drink trivia night?

7. Kathryn, have you ever tried out for Jeopardy?

8. Have either of you been to Mineral King? What was your 1st thought on it?

Sneaking In One More:

Favorite Disney Theme Park Ride?

One Big Question:

When Walt backed a project, with all his power, like Mary Poppins, dollar signs usually followed. If Walt had survived, would Mineral King’s fight been lost?

Where can people find you online?
